Boston College Eagles

Boston College finished last season where it traditionally does, among the ACC’s bottom tier. They put up a solid fight, and their 5-win season is still better than the last-place, sometimes winless finishes they’d had just a few years prior. Jim Christian got a vote of confidence from the BC administration in his retention; will this be the year he justifies his position?

Another year, another uphill battle for the Eagles, it looks like. Ky Bowman’s decision to turn pro was a killer. Then September brought the devastating news that sophomore guard Wynston Tabbs was lost for the year with an ACL tear. Tabbs was a revelation early last year before a knee injury ended his season prematurely. He was returning as BC’s only proven guard, and so now Christian will be looking for a number of new arrivals and young players to hopefully take that next step, such as sophomore guard Herron Jr, the Hamilton brothers, or one of his unheralded true freshmen. He’s turned lightly recruited 3-stars into breakout players before: Tabbs is just the latest after guys like Bowman and Jerome Robinson previously. All the same, we’re not ready to bet on anyone in particular at this stage. The Eagles did receive a slight boost from the grad-transfer commitment of former USC point guard (originally a member of Duke’s 2015 class) Derryck Thornton; he never seemed to put all the pieces together in the Pac-12 as a scorer, but perform respectably as a floor general. The lone true bright spot is true center Nik Popovic. The 6-11 banger was highly efficient on high usage last year, shooting 57% on his 2’s and is the most proven player the Eagles have returning. But last year he had Bowman and Chatman on the outside drawing defensive attention; will he face more double teams this coming year?

Ultimately, this team just has way too many questions regarding talent and experience, and it’s hard to see this year being the year Christian finally gets them over the hump. The Thornton transfer was a band-aid, but with the Tabbs injury it’s hard to see them avoiding another bottom-rung finish.

*** Updated September 4th to account for the season-ending injury to guard Wynston Tabbs
