An interesting debate arose on Twitter after Virginia Tech’s incredible shooting performance yesterday.

It dawned on me later that there ARE some numbers. Synergy Sports breaks down “Catch & Shoot” plays into Guarded vs. Unguarded, and shows us where a team ranks vis-a-vis the rest of D1 in those categories. They do this for defense and offense. So the lower the PPP other teams score in a type of play, the higher your defensive ranking. I went back to 2013-14 gathering the numbers.  Here they are:

Unguarded Shot Defense

Year Unguarded Guarded %Unguarded
2019-20 95% 93% 41.2%
2018-19 86% 93% 31.4%
2017-18 68% 96% 27.3%
2016-17 72% 64% 24.1%
2015-16 12% 42% 26.6%
2014-15 39% 88% 21.1%
2013-14 73% 62% 31.7%

The first two numbers are UVA’s defensive rank, and the third is the percentage of overall Catch-n-Shoot plays that were unguarded

Seems to me that the numbers support the proposition, especially given the lack of correlation between rank and the % of shots that are unguarded. But, Hoo knows?
