It’s time for our weekly look around the baseball landscape with the Hoos and the rest of the ACC.

As usual, we’ll take a look at how UVA stacks up in the latest baseball polls. We’ll review the results from the past weekend of action in the ACC. And we’ll check out my latest ACC power rankings.

Because the midweek schedules vary between Tuesday and Wednesday for teams, the power rankings will be based on play through the prior weekend.

Hoos In The Polls

UVA dropped universally after losing two of three to North Carolina in Chapel Hill. But how much damage was done?

Poll Current Rank Previous Rank
Baseball America 8 2
College Baseball Nation 15 8
Collegiate Baseball 25 14
D1 Baseball 16 12
NCBWA 17 12
Perfect Game 15 7
USA Today Coaches 18 14

Baseball America continues to be an outlier here although Collegiate Baseball may be one in the opposite direction as well.

ACC Weekend Scoreboard

Despite it being the first weekend of conference play, neither Clemson nor Louisville played ACC games.

Boston College (2-1): The Eagles raised eyebrows taking two of three at Duke. Sal Frelick continues to live up to the preseason hype for the surprising Eagles.

Clemson (0-2): A three-game series against rival South Carolina with one game at Clemson, one game at South Carolina, and one game at a neutral site in Greenville, SC was on the schedule. Instead, Clemson lost their home game to bad weather and dropped two one-run contests instead.

Duke (1-2): Upstart Boston College caught Duke off guard. Duke’s win in the series was by seven runs, so they’ll try to build on that.

Florida State (0-3): Getting swept at home by Pitt was the surprise of the weekend.

Georgia Tech (3-0): Georgia Tech served notice to the rest on the ACC after sweeping NC State, in Raleigh, in a matchup of ranked teams.

Louisville (2-1): After dropping the series opener to Western Illinois, Louisville rebounded to win the series. But the Cards cannot make a habit of losing to the lower tier opponents on their schedule.

Miami (1-2): After taking two of three at top ranked Florida last weekend, the Hurricanes seemed poised to establish themselves as the top dog in the ACC. Then they lost a home series to a Virginia Tech squad that looks underrated so far.

NC State (0-3): I guarantee you that the Wolfpack had higher expectations than being swept at home by a good Georgia Tech team.

North Carolina (2-1): The Heels took two of three against visiting UVA. Each game was nip and tuck with the final outcome being one run in each contest.

Notre Dame (2-1): The Irish took the rubber game of their series at Wake Forest in convincing fashion, 10 to 0, in what was their first three games of the season. A surprising series win in Winston Salem raises some eyebrows in the Irish’s direction.

Pitt: (3-0): You’d be hard pressed to find anyone that had Pitt getting the sweep in Tallahassee beyond Pitt’s players, coaches, and their family.

Virginia (1-2): The Hoos lost a competitive series to North Carolina that stressed pitching and defense. Both pitching staffs put the bats to sleep for most of the weekend.

Wake Forest (1-2): Losing the series to Notre Dame was definitely surprising. But getting shutout in the series finale was really a shock.
