With the cancellation of the Fenway Bowl due to COVID issues at UVA, the 2021 football season has concluded.

As such, we can look at the final tally of games played, and stats accumulated, for the true freshmen on the football team.

As a reminder, we track the games played because a player can play in 4 games or less while maintaining a redshirt. If a player plays in 5 games, the redshirt is burned.

Burned Redshirts

The final burned redshirt total was 8 players: Malachi Fields (WR), Mike Green (LB), James Jackson (LB), Langston Long (DB), Jacob Rodriguez (QB/FBP), Jonas Sanker (DB), West Weeks (LB), and Jay Woolfolk (QB).

Only Woolfolk played in the minimum 5 games to burn the redshirt. There were extenuating circumstances there as injuries to Brennan Armstrong forced him to start and play the entire Notre Dame game as well as making a temporary relief appearance against Virginia Tech.

Miscellaneous Notes

Quarterback/Football Player Jacob Rodriguez is in the transfer portal. He was not with the team during bowl prep. As a result, he seems like a longshot to return to UVA next season.

Linebacker West Weeks suffered a broken leg against Virginia Tech. He was unavailable for the bowl game. His availability for spring practice remains to be seen depending on the anticipated rehab period.
