North Carolina Tar Heels

North Carolina returns from its title winning season with much of its back court intact, but its front court mostly gone. An incoming freshman class lacks the star power Carolina is used to. Will it be enough for a successful season as the defending champs?

2017/18 ACC Opponents:

Home & Away: Duke, NC State, Clemson, Notre Dame
Home Only: Miami, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Pitt, Boston College
Away Only: Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Syracuse

This is Joel Berry's team now; the veteran floor general led the Heels in assists, 3 point shooting, and was second in scoring. He'll share the primary scoring load with college basketball's biggest offseason coup: the intra-conference grad transfer of Cam Johnson from Pitt, a 6'7" wing with a proven scoring touch (12 ppg last year) and the versatility to play the 2-4. But the exodus of quality big men will make this a vulnerable team in the post. Luke Maye is undersized and the incoming freshman trio lacks apparent readiness. Roy will also be looking for a core of 4-star returning guards (Williams, Robinson, and Woods) to take a step forward in consistency and production, or hope Legacy freshman Felton arrives ready to step into a major role. I believe they lack the top-end potential of a title-contender, even with the program-saving addition of Johnson, but this is still a talented team with a very winnable schedule, and Roy is a good enough coach to adapt his systems to feature a smaller lineup given his guard-heavy depth chart. This team will be in the mix of the ACC's top tier, though I'll be surprised if they get past the Sweet 16 come March.
