Welcome to a special hybrid edition of Around the ACC and the Hoos Place Power Rankings. We'll give you our top to bottom ranking of all 15 ACC hoops programs, as voted on by our four writers, with a summary of their just-completed week and their week ahead. You can also read our Preseason Power Rankings for comparison.
#1 - Duke - 9-0
Previous Ranking: #2
We have to swallow our pride and admit that, based on resume to date, Duke takes the top spot. Neutral wins over Florida and Michigan State, both Top-10 worthy programs, mean we have to contend that Greyson Allen and Marvin Bagley are among the nation's elite inside-outside pairings.
Last Week: 3-0, beat Texas (N), Florida (N), and Indiana (A)
This Week: Sat 12/2 - South Dakota (H), Tue 12/5 - St Francis (H)
#2 - Notre Dame - 6-1
Previous Ranking: T-#3
A disappointing, and convincing, road loss to the Spartans took a bit of wind out of the Irish's sails, who had catapaulted into many Top 10s after a good Maui showing, including a win over Wichita State. Bonzie Colson is who we thought he'd be, but Notre Dame is also getting great performances out of former role players like TJ Gibbs and Martinas Geben.
Last Week: 0-1, lost to Michigan State (A)
This Week: Sun 12/3 - St Francis (H), Tue 12/5 - Ball St (H)
T-#3 - Virginia - 7-0
Previous Ranking: #2
The Wahoos are holding relatively steady, beating the teams they should beat so far. The veterans are coming through, though the Hoos are still waiting for more consistency from some hyped newcomers.
Last Week: 2-0, beat Rhode Island (N) and Wisconsin (H)
This Week: Sat 12/2 - Lehigh (H), Tue 12/5 - West Virginia (A)
T-#3 - Miami - 6-0
Previous Ranking: T-#3
Miami had played one of the nation's easiest schedules before this week, so their perfect record came with question marks, especially after they were challenged by LaSalle. But going on the road to beat a ranked Minnesota squad settled a lot of doubt. Big man Dewan Huell is officially breaking out, shooting 70% on the year so far.
Last Week: 2-0, beat North Florida (H) and Minnesota (A)
This Week: Sat 12/2 - Princeton (N), Tue 12/5 - Boston U (H)
#5 - North Carolina - 6-1
Previous Ranking: #5
UNC had spent the first two weeks of the year beating teams it was supposed to beat before it ran into a buzzsaw at the PK80 event when it was dismantled by Michigan State. They bounced back with a convincing home win over Michigan, but desperately need Cam Johnson back to bolster their 3 and 4 positions.
Last Week: 2-1, beat Arkansas (N), lost to Michigan State (N), beat Michigan (H)
This Week: Fri 12/1 - Davidson (A), Sun 12/3 - Tulane (H), Wed 12/6 - Western Carolina (H)
#6 - Louisville - 4-1
Previous Ranking: #6
Louisville has played one good team and got embarrassed. Their defense held relatively well against Purdue, but their offense was a mess, shooting only 32%. A big game vs Seton Hall, at the Yum! Center, will tell us more about this team's resilience.
Last Week: 2-0, beat St Francis (H), lost to Purdue (A)
This Week: Sun 12/3 - Seton Hall (H), Wed 12/6 - Siena (H)
#7 - Virginia Tech - 6-1
Previous Ranking: #10
The Hokies make a jump largely based on a stellar second half against Iowa. We're not beating them up too much for the neutral court loss to St Louis, they're working in a lot of new and rustry players, but they're shooting the ball at an elite level, an eFG% of 65.1%, best in the country.
Last Week: 2-0, beat Morehead St (H) and Iowa (H)
This Week: Sat 12/2 - Mississippi (A), Wed 12/6 - Radford (H)
#8 - Syracuse - 6-1
Previous Ranking: T-#11
The Orange finally faced their first Top 100 team this week in hosting Maryland. It was a good win, and Frank Howard has effectively seized the PG spot, settling a big question mark. They are still very reliant on freshmen, 3 in their primary rotation. A big week this with neutral court games against KU in Miami and UConn at MSG.
Last Week: 1-0, beat Maryland (H)
This Week: Sat 12/2 - Kansas (N), Tue 12/5 - UConn (N)
#9 - Florida State - 6-0
Previous Ranking: #13
Florida State has taken care of business so far, although they haven't faced a team ranked in KenPom's Top 100. Beating Rutgers isn't going to be a statement win on anyone's tournament resume. Facing Florida this week will be a legit litmus test. Wing Terrance Mann has been the pleasant surpris thus far.
Last Week: 2-0, beat the Citadel (H) and Rutgers (A)
This Week: Mon 12/4 - Florida (A), Wed 12/6 - Loyola (H)
#10 - NC State - 6-2
Previous Ranking: #8
State is still a mixed bag. They scored a big win over Arizona that looked less impressive after Zona dropped two more games. They also lost to Northern Iowa. Compounding matters is the loss of PF Darius Hicks to injury for the year and nagging knee pain for Abu. Omer Yurtseven looked like a future NBA player in their B1G win over Penn State, with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Last Week: 1-1, lost to Tennessee (N), beat Penn State (H)
This Week: Sat 12/2 - South Carolina State
#11 - Clemson - 6-1
Previous Ranking: #14
The loss to Temple two weeks ago was expected of this Clemson squad. This week's B1G challenge win over Ohio State was a pleasant surprise. Yes Ohio State is rebuilding, but any road P5 win is a cause for optimism for Tigers fans. The backcourt duo of Shelton Mitchell and Marcquise Reed are coming up big.
Last Week: 2-0, beat Texas Southern (H) and Ohio State (A)
This Week: Sun 12/3 - UNC Asheville (H)
#12 - Georgia Tech - 4-1
Previous Ranking: #7
Georgia Tech's first two weeks had been forgettable with the suspension of Josh Okogie and Tadric Jackson. Jackson came back to give GT a respectable home win over slumping Northwestern, but Okogie's finger injury may keep him out until January. GT's upside is very limited without him, even with Ben Lammers admirably carrying the squad (16.2 ppg and 8.0 rpg).
Last Week: 2-0, beat North Texas (H) and Northwestern (H)
This Week: Fri 12/1 - Grambling St (H), Sun 12/3 - Tennessee (H), Wed 12/6 - Wofford (A)
#13 - Boston College - 5-3
Previous Ranking: T-#11
The Eagles are trying, and there's no shame in losses to Texas Tech (better than ya think!) and Providence. But the loss to Nebraska and going down to the wire with Colgate indicate they might not be as far along in the rebuild as hoped. They can't shoot the 3 and for as guard-dominant as they are, rarely generate turnovers.
Last Week: 0-2, lost to Providence (A) and Nebraska (A)
This Week: Sat, 12/2 - Hartford (H)
#14 - Wake Forest - 3-4
Previous Ranking: #9
At least we knew Pitt was going to be bad. Wake takes the title as the ACC's biggest disappointment to date, racking up early season losses to the likes of Georgia Southern and Drake. Last week was a nice bounce-back with home wins over UNC-G and B1G bottom-feeder Illinois, but they've got a lot of work to do to erase those four November losses.
Last Week: 2-0, beat UNC-Greensboro (H) and Illinois (H)
This Week: Sat 12/2 - Richmond (H), Tue 12/5 - Charlotte (A)
#15 - Pittsburgh - 3-4
Previous Ranking: #15
Pitt has turned out to be exactly who we thought they'd be. Embarassing losses to Navy and Montana, a 31 point loss to Penn State, and being taken to the final minute by both UC-SB and High Point. Senior stretch-5 Ryan Luther has been the lone bright spot, with 13.4 ppg and 9.1 rpg on very high percentages.
Last Week: 2-0, beat Lehigh (H) and High Point (H)
This Week: Fri 12/1 - Duquense (N), Tue 12/5 - Mount St Mary's (H)
