Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Irish had high hopes for the 2017-18 campaign with all-ACC-level seniors in Bonzie Colson and Matt Farrell, but a rash of major injuries dashed those hopes and Notre Dame wound up in the NIT. With a new-look roster, can coach Brey get the Irish back into the Dance?

Outlook:

If there was one benefit to last year's injury disaster, it's that the youngster's got a chance to jump right in the deep end. With Farrell, Coslon, Geben, and Torres gone, it's a new generation's turn to run for coach Brey. The revelation last year was Temple Gibbs, who just exploded when he was given the keys. He's the unquestioned star of the Irish this year, as he can shoot, score, create, and defend. Who will support him, however? DJ Harvey is the safe bet, as the former five star recruit started to flash his potential last season before injuries shut his season down in late January. The big wing has all the tools, though, and you know he's developing under Brey. After those two, there are four returners and six new faces in the mix, and how those shake out are anyone's guess. There's a nice young core here, especially the 2018 commits of Hubb and Laszewski, who should support Harvey as the stars of the future, but TBD if they're ready to make much of a splash this year. Like Tony Bennett, Mike Brey is a coach who demands a lot of his freshmen before they flourish (Gibbs was very quiet his freshman year), and that five-man freshman class may be stuck in a quiet supporting role this year. So it's up to steady but unspectacular veterans like Pflueger, Djogo, Burns, Mooney, and the UConn transfer Durham to platoon in running Brey's 4-out system efficiently. This looks like a .500 ACC squad at the moment, one that will out-execute a lot of less disciplined teams on many nights, but simply be out-talented on many others.
