Syracuse Orange

Despite being the least deep team in the ACC last year, regularly playing starters the full 40 minutes a game, Cuse snuck into the NCAAT play-in game and ripped off three wins before a narrow loss to Duke in the Sweet 16. It was a stressful season, but with basically their entire roster returning and depth being added, could this be a return to the top?

Syracuse's stock for next year buoyed strong when rising junior guard Tyus Battle elected to stay for another year. The star scorer and former five-star was Cuse's workhorse, scoring 20 points a night in ACC play. They only effectively went 7 deep last year, and only 3 deep in the backcourt as then-freshman guard Howard Washington struggled to adapt to ACC play, forcing the backcourt trio of Battle, Franklin Howard, and freshman breakout Brissett to play 40 minutes apiece game after game. This year, there's hope that they can get some relief. First, there's an expectation Washington will take a step forward in readiness. Second, they are joined by RS Soph ECU transfer wing Elijah Hughes and 4-star combo guard freshman Jalen Carey. The front court will be a little thin, with only the sophomore Sidibe availble to back up Dolezaj and Chukwu at the 4 and 5 (we're not projecting Braswell to make much of an impact as a freshman), though Cuse could always go smaller with Brissett having the length to move to the 4. Three point shooting will be the team's biggest question mark going into the season, with Brissett's 33% 3P% the best on the roster. But even with that weakness, they've got athleticism, experience, some depth, and a devastating defense (5th nationally last year with every starter returning) that will have Cuse in the Top 25 all season and a very safe pick for another NCAA Tourney performance.
