Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Wake followed up a 2016 NCAAT berth (First Four, but still!) with a crash-and-burn 2017 that saw them lose to the likes of Georgia Southern and Liberty before finishing 2nd-to-last in the ACC. Is there any hope that 2018-19 can be a rebound?

Outlook:

Wake only brings back four players from last year, only two of which played a meaningful role (Brown and Sarr), and is plugging a pair of grad transfers into the lineup to try and paper over an otherwise very young squad. Five freshmen join the roster, including a potential one-and-done wing forward in Hoard, and the solid duo of wing Mucius (Rivals #106) and PG Lewis (lower ranked, but had been much higher profile before missing his senior HS season to injury) who could be long-term assets. (Not much is expected of Wynn or Wright this year.) The roster isn't totally devoid of talent... Chaundee Brown, a former Top 50 recruit, has a ton of upside, and Childress (yes, Randolph's son) has established himself as a competent veteran. But it's just too much of a patchwork lineup right now for me to buy into. Too many new faces, too few ACC-ready bodies, and a head coach who has yet to prove to anyone he can put a consistent winner on the floor. They may not be the worst team in the conference (Pitt and GT will vye for that dishonor), but expecting even the NIT from this group is a stretch.
