"A New Pursuit"

A Publication of the HOOS Place Gang

The Breakthrough is history. The 2018-19 team's United Pursuit brought Virginia Basketball to the ultimate height: the National Championship. The core players of that team are off living their NBA dreams, while players who created magic and became stars during that NCAA Tournament return to lead a new group on...

Fall is a busy time for college baseball programs. And the Hoos are no different. We're currently in the middle of the fall baseball season which is most akin to football's spring practice. Workouts are taking place. The Hoos have played, and won, scrimmages against Liberty and the Ontario Blue Jays. And the first game of the seven game Orange And Blue World Series is in the books with game two scheduled for today (October 8).

Added to this mix this offseason wa...

As the dog days of summer wear on, summer baseball assignments and commitments are beginning to wind down. Soon, players will be returning to Grounds or reporting there for the first time.

Before too long, Fall Baseball will begin. We'll have scrimmages against other teams, the Orange And Blue World Series, the Iron Cavalier Challenge, and the schedule release to hold us over until the beginning of the 2020 season in February.

The 2019 MLB Draft signing period concluded on Friday, July 12. With that milestone passing, we now have some clarity on the size of the roster heading into the 2020 season. It's now a good time to dive into the numbers to see where the Hoos stand versus NCAA roster limitations for D1 programs.

First, the rules...

Division 1 Baseball Roster Rules

We've reached the final series of the regular season and the Hoos are suddenly red hot. All that remains before the ACC Tournament in Durham is a trip to Blacksburg for three against rival Virginia Tech. A berth in the aforementioned ACC Tournament is already clinched. The 2018-2019 Commonwealth Clash is already won by the Hoos.

Besides pride, is there anything left to play for? Oh yeah, just a spot in the field of 64!

We've arrived at the home finale for the 2019 season. It's coming on the heels of a series win over top 5, and ACC leader, Louisville. The win over the Cardinals garnered national attention. As a result, the Hoos find themselves either on the bubble of the field of 64 or tantalizingly close.

What we need from here are two things: wins and good wins.

The baseball program didn't release their own info on the 2019 recruiting class. As with the 2018 class, we're happy to pick up the slack here at HOOS Place. Welcome to our introduction to the latest batch of future Wahoo baseball players. If they enroll, the players will enter the university this summer and be members of the 2020 UVA Baseball team.

As of this writing, the Hoos have the 22nd ranked class in 2019 per PerfectGame.org's class rankings. It's a 13 me...

As it becomes more likely that the Hoos will need to win the ACC Tournament to make the field of 64, focus shifts to the annual spring gathering that's held in Durham this year. In order to win the ACC Tournament, you must first qualify for it.

As each ACC series preview has noted, the top twelve teams qualify. That means two conference squads are left at home with their season over.

Midweek Games - VCU

Posted on April 29, 2019 in The Team by Karl Hess.

So close, yet so far away appears destined to be the theme for UVA baseball in 2019. The Hoos lost 2 of 3 at North Carolina this past weekend. But they had ample opportunities to return to Charlottesville with a sweep over the Tarheels. Instead, it goes into the book as the third consecutive ACC series loss.

There's little time to sit around and sulk, however. The annual trip to Richmond to play VCU at The Diamond is on tap for Tuesday night. The last game prio...

The back end of Saturday's doubleheader against Florida State was a gut check moment for this team. Having lost five ACC games in a row, all at home, the 2019 season appeared to be stuck in neutral and possibly sliding backwards down the hill.

Few would have predicted the offensive explosion that was to come in UVA's 13 to 3 win to close the series. Now, the Hoos hit the road to play a top 25 North Carolina squad as the owners of a three-game winning strea...
