2020 Football Season Preview

Welcome, everyone, to the official kickoff of Hoos Place's 2020 football season preview. We've been working hard to provide Virginia football fans some of the most in-depth coverage available online (and for FREE no less!). We'll spend the next month rolling out content, including position group reports, breakdowns of the offensive and defensive phases, and an overview of the schedule, before we wrap up with final thoughts on Virginia's upcoming season.

So, uh, this is weird, isn't it?

This is Hoos Place's fourth academic year of operation, and third of covering football. Every year it feels like something really makes that year unique; key players gone and new players in their place, dramatic endings to the season prior, big philosophical questions for the coaching staff... All those usual annual concerns feel so quaint right now, don't they?

Virginia had a record-setting passing attack in 2019, thanks primarily to the work put in by the elite WR trio of Joe Reed, Hasise Dubois, and Terrell Jana, ea...

No position group is arguably more important to the success of a team than the offensive line, no position takes longer to develop, and none in the UVA program...

Virginia's offense last year had its highs and its lows, but ultimately the highs won out as Bryce Perkins and company won a number of shootouts down the stretch to lift the Hoos into the ACC Championship Game and ultimately the Orange Bowl. But the media, with the depar...

Linebacker is the glory position in the UVA defense. It sets the pace and #TheStandard. It creates the most havoc and gets the most attention. It even has more...

It’s not often you see the identity of a team flip completely over the course of a season, but that’s what happened to the 2019 Virginia football team. In September especially and even into October, Virginia was a defense-first team. With a strong-enough defensive...

In years past we've focused our football power rankings on the Coastal Division, both as part of our summer previews and as running in-season content. How BC, NC State, and Syracuse racked and stacked was ultimately of very little concern to us Hoos; we really only needed to gauge our place in our Division's heirarchy as we chased a Coastal crown and battled our annual foes VT, UNC, and Miami.

But this year is different. There are no divisions. We're one b...

As always, we like to hear from you, our readers, and see what's on your mind going into the season. Our cadre of writers will take turns giving their thoughts on your queries below. Of course, you needn't wait for a Mail Call to interact with us... we man our Twitter account far more continuously than our employers or wives may like! So reach out anytime.

Let's dive in and see what questions and concerns you have for us going into yet another high expectation s...

It's always exciting to welcome new Hoos to the football program. Every season we get twenty or so new faces on the team, many of whom are going to do great things at UVA over the next four or five years. Today we're excited to recap the 14 new first years (yes, it was a very small class) you're going to get to know over the coming seasons, first looking back at what we said after they signed with UVA in either December or Feburary, then updating our feelings now that they've finished summer camp.

In any given year, when we talk about new faces on the football team, we're talking almost exclusively about the new freshmen. It's not to say that UVA, either under Bronco or under previous regimes, didn't take transfers. But it was maybe one or two a year.

This year is different.

The extentuating circumstances relating to the pandemic, which...

Every year as we wind down our season previews for football and basketball, we ask our writers to look critically at UVA and talk about the X-Factors to a successful season. What three things do they think the season will ultimately boil down to? Maybe it's a player, maybe it's  an aspect of the offense or defense, maybe it's an intangible. For everyone, they're looking for something different. What do our writers think it will be this year?

We're almost done with our 2020 football preview content, and now's the point where we survey our writers and ask them to share their Bold Predictions for the season ahead. And when we say "bold," we're asking our writers to really go out on a limb, no safe predictions. As such, these may be a bit out there, but where's the fun in playing it safe?

So without further ado, let's see what our writers are betting on this year...

As we wrap our official season preview coverage and next week go into our usual game-week battle rhythm talking the Tech game, the last thing we want to do is share our Final Thoughts. This is our usual place for each of our writers to spend a few minutes stepping back to speak whatever is on their mind after spending the last month deep-diving the X's and O's surrounding the team and the conference. It's an open space for whatever feelings, concerns, hopes or fears ultimately weigh heavy on our minds as we christen another new season in Charlottesville.
